On Tour - RAAF in the UK 7 July 2010

This was a special day as we visited Holme upon Spalding Moor and then down to RAAF Scampton. Holme upon Spalding Moor was where 458 Squadron flew from as did 76 Squadron RAF commanded by Leonard Cheshire VC. Our own Jim Whittem was a 458 pilot and he gave a small tribute to those of his squadron who had fallen. We followed with a prayer from Andrew Munkman who had two uncles who served with the squadron.

Poppies were laid at the memorials and following the Ode a minutes silence was offered. We were fortunate to be shown through the old headquarters building where there were old photographs of the squadrons. Andrew saw both his uncles in the photographs.

Following that moving ceremony we moved down to RAF Scampton, home of the Dambusters, and were given an escorted tour of the airfield and the buildings. It was a special experience where we were taken into the hanger which was the home of the Red Arrows, special indeed.

At the end of this wonderful day we continued to our hotel with some of us going into Lincoln to view the Cathedral before dinner. Dinner was taken at a local restaurant.
