On Tour - Greece and Crete ANZAC Day in Athens 2011 - 25 April 2011
We had close to 100 at the first Dawn Service in Athens, all went well and as the Anglican Minister failed to show, our tour leader Colonel Graham Fleeton had to become that person, he even said the Benediction at the end. Graham considers he will need to keep away from lightening for a while.
Our day started with the First ever ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Athens and progressed throughthe Embassy's Service at 11:00 and then being invited to attend the official function at the Poesidon Hotel. Many were there including military attaches from, Turkey, British, Greek and Australia.
A fair bit of lobbying took place and it seems that the Greeks are keen to develop a tradition that fits in well with ours, that is a Dawn Service in lieu of the 11:00 Service.
We will keep up the pressure over the next 12 months and believe a Dawn Service it will be.
