On Tour - Egypt and Libya - 24 March 2010

A most moving day for a few our tour group as we visited areas where they or their family had been and fought. Francis Monotti served here as a Rat of Tobruk and with his son Andrew we tried to locate some of the areas that were familiar to him, but much has changed since Francis was last here.

Peter Byrne's father was the CO of 2/7 Field Ambulance and was located at the Hospital Tree and Peter was very taken indeed to walk that same ground over which his father walked during those 242 days of the siege. Peter's father was wounded during the siege, evacuated for treatment and then returned back to Tobruk.

Our time in Tobruk has been very informative and we were able to find a location from which we could discuss the defence system by Morshead and the reasons for his successful actions during that time. Many memorials were visited and we laid a wreath from our Tour at the Commonwealth War Cemetery.

We slipped back into our hotel for dinner and an early night for tomorrow we travel over 350 klms to Apollonia.
