On Tour - Our Other ANZAC Day 24 April 2012

The group visited the sites of the Battle of the Somme 1916 and the Battle of Bullecourt 1917.

The day was cold and wet.

The day started with visits to the start of the Battle of the Somme then to the specific Australian involvement at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm.

A side visit to Beaumont Hamel showed the impact of one day, 1 July 1916, on a small independent country of New Foundland. The New Foundland Regiment had served at Gallipoli 1915 to 1916.

At the AIF Burial Ground Cemetery at Flers, Ken Goodchild found the grave of his relative, Walter Sheen. A ceremony was held at the grave site.

The cemetery was undergoing maintenance with both lawn mowing and headstone re-engraving at the time of the visit.

Then the group moved to Bullecourt. The rain was pouring down as the presentation had to be given at the '6 ways' with the group on the bus. After the rain abated the group moved to the 'Bullecourt Memorial'.

The group then returned to the hotel at Assevillers for an early night.
