On Tour - Bomber Command (RAAF in the UK) 4 July 2012

This was a day where we were able to visit Elvington Airfield in the morning and then have free time in the afternoon to visit York. Elvington was an airfield that was left as it was in 1945 as the bomber crews left following the end of the war. The Yorshire Heritage Museum is now in place and a visit takes you into buildings that from the outside they look as per 1945 but have been renovated and repaired inside to a high standard.

There is still a mosquito that is able to taxi onto the airfield and other aeroplanes that do fly. There is also a Halifax that is on display. The control tower and various other displays in the old buildings give one the impression they are in that period when Elvington sent its planes to Europe as part of Bomber Command.

There were many interesting areas to see in York and our group headed to the York Minster, The Shambles or the National Railway Museum. A very good day for all and tomorrow we head to Shifnal and the Cosford Museum.
