On Tour - Boer War in South Africa 28 May 2016

Well what a great day of touring.

We headed west on the N4, then south on the N11 to the site of the battle of Wilmansrust. There we saw the site where 23 Victorians lost their lives in a battle where by order, they set up an insecure bivouac.

A couple of kilometres on we were adjacent Brapan Farm crossing the sprut where 16 year old Anthony Forrest lost his life defending a supply wagon.

Then to Ermelo where we were met by Athol Stark of Highveld Tourism Mpumalanga who hosted us to a visit to the Onverwacht battle memorial, lunch and a visit to the Ermelo Boer War Cemetery, last resting place of TPR Avard of the NSWL and others. Athol communicated his detailed knowledge of the battle and history of the Highveld in a most professional manner (see video). The VIP, was a student chosen from a local high school, she impressed us, could eventually be the first female President of the RSA.

Lunch followed at the Highveld Tourist Centre, then a visit to the Ermelo Boer War cemetery.

Another drive and we were back at our Witbank (eMalahleni) hotel for the night. Tomorrow Vereeniging, Vredefort and Klerksdorp.
