On Tour - Rail in the UK Tour 1 July 2023

An easier day for our driver Michael and a relaxed day for the Tour group as we boarded the North Yorkshire Moors Railway trip from Pickering to Whitby. We boarded the train just before 0915 for a 0920 departure. We had a very good run to Whitby passing through Lewisham, Goathland and Grasmont before arriving into Whitby at 1110. We had travelled through the area where the TV show Heatbeat was made and it represented that local area. Beautiful countryside was viewed on both sides of the lines as we trundled along.

Arriving into Whitby we had arranged to spend 2 hours there before returning to the train for our return journey to Pickering. Russell and I headed up to the ruins of Whitby Abbey which had in the past been raided by Vikings, survived a major fire and finally was destroyed by Henry VIII as part of the Reformation. While up there on the headland we were accosted by a fierce wind coming out of the north east. Tom and Graham stayed down in the town and explored some of those lanes and pedestrian walks as did Kate and Doug. There were so many places to enjoy lunch, it was hard to select what one wanted, but we did, and all enjoyed their lunch. The crowds were quite large as including those from our train there were 8 large coaches in the coach park. A good day for the shops, cafes and restaurants and the great weather helped.

We gathered, boarded our train and headed back to Pickering. Arriving at 1555, we were informed by Michael that the Coach had broken down with a dead Battery. As the coach was in the coach park some 10 minutes away, we decided to walk through the lovely village to where the coach was to add support to Michael as he waited for the new battery to be delivered. Battery arrived and we headed home. Arriving home, we freshened and made our way to Enoteca an Italian Restaurant, the same we went to the night previously which we loved the night before. Great food cooked to perfection.

Tomorrow, we head north for another adventure.
