A really great day of touring. We headed out at the sensible hour of 0900 for the British front line 1916 marker at La Boisselle thence to the nearby Lochnagar mine crater where we discussed the technique of mining in early 20th Century warfare. Thence to Pozières where we discussed the heroic actions, visited the 1st Division Memorial and nearby windmill feature. Our rather good box lunch was eaten at Thiepval where we got a chance to visit the British Memorial and book shop.
After lunch we headed for Beaumont Hamel where we were most impressed with the Canadian Memorial and were able to discuss how the Newfoundland Battalion was annihilated. This was followed by a visit to Flers then Bullecourt where we visited the Australian Memorials discussed in detail the action that saw more Australian casualties than any other.
An early night, tomorrow we have to leave at 0230 so as to be at the Villers-Bretonneux dawn service.
