The first day of this special tour to follow the footsteps of the Australian Corps as it advanced toward victory under the leadership of Sir John Monash.
During the next 2 weeks we will, in great detail visit and discuss the actions at many of those significant battles that finally broke through the Hindenburg Line and in doing so brought the War to an end. The Australians were brilliant and the casualties suffered in the time from March to 5th October 2018 were less than those suffered on one night in July 1916, at Fromelles!
Names run off the tongue as you relate those 1918 actions, Amiens, Chuignes, Proyart, Mont St Quentin, Peronne and Montbrehain, our last action before leaving the line. We will visit all those places, plus more during this commemorative tour.
Accompanying us on this tour will be the Combined RSL Pipes and Drums and they will be faced with a full programme starting tomorrow night as the support Band to that famous service at Menin Gate.
Both groups gathered in the 2 hotels near CDG Airport, Pipes and Drums at the Novotel Convention and Wellness Hotel and History Tour group at the Mercure CDG Airport and Convention Hotel. The Pipes and Drums had their first rehearsal and warm up in the grounds of the hotel before marching into the hotel foyer for an impromptu recital. An excellent start for tomorrow, we head north.
