A great day of battlefield touring. Beautiful weather.
First we visited the Lochnagar crater, then the Battle of Pozières sites in the village, windmill and Mouquet Farm. All were impressed with the single stele that is the 1 Div Memorial. What has been near the Windmill did not impress quite as much. The battles were discussed in detail
On to Thiepval the incredible British Memorial and shop where some wreaths were purchased.
In parallel Cynthia got the opportunity to purchase flowers and honour her ancestor at Villers Brettoneux.
After an explanation of the battle of Dernancourt a picnic lunch was had adjacent the cemetery.
At Sailly Le Sec, our patrons were introduced to the 3 Div Memorial another single stele. What happened there and why the memorial was so placed, was explained in detail.
We then moved to Cachy where the 13 Bde action on 24/25 April 1918 was discussed.
The tour then split, most of our tourists visited Adelaide Cemetery and the Victoria School Museum. Phil and Chris visited Bertangles, site of Monash's HQ, then a special grave in a Corby cemetery. They too then visited the Victoria School Museum. A long day, many memories, more to come tomorrow.
