On Tour - Greece and Crete Tour 25 April 2023

This was to be a big day, both moving and memorable, but did not turn out as we thought it would. At 0500 we headed out to the Phaleron Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery where we conducted our ANZAC Day Dawn Service. This was quite moving and after we sang the tune, Abide with Me, Mary read the 1st Lesson then, as the Army Priest did not show up. It was a pity he didn’t arrive as he has supported our Service now for quite a few years. We had a full programme with an introduction, Prayers that we said together, a second reading by Lesley, the readings were The Book of Psalms: Psalm 46 and Mathew 5: 1-9. Between the readings we said Prayers of Remembrance and for the Australian, New Zealand and Hellenic Defence Forces before the Wreath Laying and Ode of Remembrance. The Last Post and National Anthems of Greece, New Zealand and Australia followed to end the Service.

Breakfast at the Coral Hotel overlooking the harbour was enjoyed by all before we went back to our hotel to change before our visit to the Acropolis Museum as we missed visiting it yesterday due to a change in timings by the Museum.

From the visit to the Museum we went back to the Phaleron Cemetery to be present at the Australian Govt ANZAC Day Service, at 1130. However, upon arriving we found the Cemetery empty, and it seems that the Service was cancelled. We took that in our stride and returned to our hotel to have a drink and to toast all those who were lost or injured during the campaign. Tonight will be our last night together this tour and tomorrow we all move on to our next adventures.
