Today the weather started out bad and got better. No rain by mid-day, sun peeping through the clouds later in the afternoon.
Our first visit was to the Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge. Our guests stood in awe of this magnificent structure. The small museum was of great interest, the gift shop well patronised. We were then taken on a tour of the wartime tunnel system and trenches by Kathleen, a very erudite Canadian student guide. The tunnels were used to feed troops into the trench system for the successful assault on the Germans by the Canadian Corps working together for the first time in April 1917.
Our next call was to Fromelles where we visited the Cobber Memorial, VC Corner, Pheasant Wood Cemetery, Museum and shop. John Hitchen gave us all a detailed account of the Battle and decimation of McKay's 5th Division in July 1916.
Lunch was at McDonalds, a repast that occasioned a walk between the Irish Tower and New Zealand monument at Messines where the introduction to battle of Monash's 3rd Division was discussed. Thence to our hotel for a rest before dinner. Tomorrow we visit Brugge and take part in the Menin Gate ceremony.
